Again, some of these motives are also presented in the game’s dialogue and level design. Having her “tentacles” reach out far and wide, trying to control everything around her, forcing her will on the world, her husband, or her child. When you first meet her lying in the ocean of Kay’s tears, her hair is spread out in all directions, which could translate into an overbearing nature. As analyzed in the paragraph before, what if the chameleon father was paralyzed and just went along with all her decisions for the family as if he was turned to stone?Īnother feature of the mother’s monstrous appearance is her hair. The Medusa is a creature that can turn you into stone by looking at you. Let’s look at the other side for the second short analysis, the mother. Put that characteristic into our real world, and you can extrapolate the features such a father must have represented. A chameleon is known for changing its color depending on his environment. I wouldn’t say that this represents my experience with my father, but I certainly have seen that “type” person before. Sometimes the fog lifts and you get to see the sun for a few moments before the world drowns again. It often rains and the world is dark with almost no light, mirroring Kay’s current mood. She guides Kay from a distance and stays untouchable until the final stretch of the game.Īs Kay, you always have to have an eye on the water, solving small puzzles to progress and sometimes even diving in. She is covered in light, can fly, and wears a yellow raincoat to protect her from the tears. The only friend and literal glimmer of hope is a child version of Kay representing Joy. Ofter her path is blocked by another monster, her self-doubt, keeping her from making progress if she’s not willing to face her doubts. Sometimes you just have to let your mind wander…
